down with Berlin, hall of shame!

I have only been living in Melville for two months, right on 7th street. It isn't just the Berlin Bar crowd - in general the type of people drawn here by the clubs in 7th street between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue at night are the problem. I have witnessed several fights from the (dis)comfort of my home by now. Show offs revving their cars up and down the street with clubbers cheering. Cars with bigger sound systems than the clubs. On one occasion 4 or 5 guys were trying to force another guy into the boot of their car - claiming that he had stolen a cellphone. They couldn't get him into the car so they just started assaulting him. I tried to phone 10111, but with my first call they just hung up and on my second call they put me on hold after answering and just as I started to explain what was going on. If only the clubs catered to more responsible and reserved tastes, but the owners don't have to live here, so why should they care?

Let's Clean Up. YES WE SHALL!

You have hit the nail on the head.

Now is the time to excercise some zero tolerance. Enough is enough.

The residents need to put their fear behind them and stand together to fight the scourge infesting the suburb.

I am in the process of putting a lobby together to combat irresponsible student communes causing absolute havoc in the suburb with homeowners and rate payers. Regretfully the students who are here to study hard and who display a level of civil obedience that can only but be admired, will suffer with the bad apples in the barrel. What a pity.

Here is a copy of my newsletter. Any thoughts/ideas would be welcome.

Chin up folks!

Residents Against Irresponsible Communes
(RAIC) Letter 1/2/09 February 10, 2009

For a period exceeding three years now, there have been incidents of unruly, excessively noisy, drunken and privacy invading behaviour emanating from student communes in the suburbs of Melville and Auckland Park.

This behaviour is supported and bolstered by student friends of the tenants of these communes, with music blaring from their open vehicles, alcohol being consumed out of vehicle boots in the street, unacceptable levels of noise from shouting and hooting, vehicles revving highly, speeding up and down streets continuously and the throwing of bottles and trash into the street after these parties, which on many an occasion have relentlessly continued to the early hours of the morning, on any given night of the week.

These communes are owned by private individuals capitalising on mass accommodation within small environments to students who are unsupervised and in a prime position to dictate their unruly behaviour onto the immediate neighbourhood of whom the majority are home owners and rate payers.
These home owners and rate payers strive to enjoy a tranquil, peaceful, respectful and civilized neighbourhood for all and sundry.

The home owners and rate payers are now undertaking to remedy this problem with immediate effect.

The most notorious of these communes is situated at 4 Finchley Road, Auckland Park, and is owned by a businessman known to the Auckland Park residents; he currently resides in Pietermaritzberg, KZN.

This gentleman has been approached on numerous occasions by the writers who have politely requested diplomatic dialogue to remedy the unruly student behaviour taking place regularly and at all hours at this property.

Even with verbal threats of grievous bodily harm made by certain of his tenant students against the neighbours, this gentleman has to date not entertained the polite requests for a meeting, or a last resort request to engage together in diplomatic dialogue with the Brixton Police Precinct to resolve amicably the grievances of the residents towards this unruly and threatening student behaviour.

This had resulted in numerous calls to the Brixton Police at all hours of the day and night on certain occasions to request the assistance of a Squad Car to assist in halting the unruly and noisy behaviour from the commune at 4 Finchley Road, Auckland Park.

The actions of the police callouts have not remedied or altered the behaviour of the offending parties, much to their humour and laughter.
Inspector Setebe of the Brixton Police Precinct is well aware that these students do not take the Police seriously and has strongly assured the residents that he will not tolerate civil disobedience, and will nip in the bud any civil disorder as well as put at their disposal a Squad Car 24/7 to combat this problem.

He has further requested that together with his team the resident’s record vehicle licence plate numbers and student card numbers of the offenders, allowing him to contact both the University and their parents for remedy and action.

Furthermore any music equipment utilised in transmitting unacceptable levels of noise will be subject to police confiscation together with the car batteries of offending vehicles.

Regretfully, after many requests for co-operation with no success, the situation has now reached a stage where relief and remedy will be sought from the Magistrates Court to have these offending communes closed down, by Order of the Court.

This letter serves to petition residents in Melville and Auckland Park for their committed support in maintaining a suburb of tranquility, happiness, neighbourly respect, civility and diplomacy.

The residents continue to embrace all citizens within our suburb who positively contribute to the investment and long term commitment to a happy, better, cleaner, quieter and no crime environment.
