Breakfast Xpress

The Breakfast Xpress launches on 94.7 Highveld Stereo on Monday August 2 and promises Joburg a breakfast show that’s as dynamic as the city itself.

Featuring the same personalities who have been part of listeners’ lives for years, the team is taking the show to new levels with an urban, fast-paced, edgy energy, and a host of great new features.

“We believe Joburg is ready for something new, fresh and vibrant and there is not a question in my mind that the Breakfast Xpress will be a success,” said Terry Volkwyn, CEO of Primedia Broadcasting.

Darren Simpson will be host of the Breakfast Xpress, a role he’s grown into over a 16 year career in radio that started when he was just 16 years old at Capital Radio in Durban. His passion for the medium took him to Australia and the UK where he hosted his own shows before he returned to South Africa to join 94.7 Highveld Stereo.

He started as a contributor with his popular “Whackhead” pranks but soon took on increasing responsibility for general content on the breakfast show. From driving a lot of the behind-the-scenes activity, Darren is now ready to step into the driving seat. Listeners can expect to see a lot more depth to his on-air persona, with the same wit, pace and playfulness they have come to love.

“We want listeners to relate to us as real people, which we are,” said Darren. “This is not Ivory Tower radio,” he explained. “We want listeners to know we’re in it with them, talking to them, not at them. We want them to relate to us as friends – the friends who know everything first and who you have to listen to if you want to know what’s going on in this city.”

Darren will be joined by Samantha Cowen, Bongani Nxumalo, Paul Rotherham, Graeme Joffe, Greg Volkwyn and Vin Deysel.

Along with increasing the pace and refreshing the content, the presenters intend to integrate their radio offering with digital mediums, making them available online for all listeners.
“Podcasts have become an important feature for radio and it’s certainly a highlight for expats. We intend to increase our offering of video and podcasts for the site,” said Darren.

Throughout the show the audience will be participating through interactive features, a website stuffed with great content and constant feedback via social networks, smses and calls.

Most importantly the new breakfast show will allow the audience to see a different side of the presenters they’ve grown to love.

“This team has a wealth of broadcast experience,” said 94.7 Highveld Stereo station manager, Ravi Naidoo. “They’re very creative, know what works and how, so we’re excited to see them take on their new roles and are confident that they will produce a world class breakfast show.”

The Breakfast Xpress airs from 6am to 9am weekdays on 94.7 Highveld Stereo.
