The Pinise Saul Quintet featuring Bheki Khoza - live at Lucky Bean

Lucky Bean once again presents an artist not often heard in her homeland. Pinise Saul: The great South African vocalist, known as the "Queen of African Jazz", is a remarkable singer who fuses African traditional harmonies and contemporary rhythms to create a style that is uniquely hers. Her soulful and passionate voice, her incredible range, her brilliant compositions and her inspired improvisations make her performances unforgettable experiences.

She started singing in South Africa as a child, later joining Ipi Tombi and travelling to Europe and Canada. She has worked with many brilliant South African musicians including Hugh Masekela, Dudu Pukwana and Lucky Ranku. Alongside Lucky she is the creative power behind The South African Gospel Singers, The African Jazz Allstars and Township Express. She regularly performs at Ronnie Scotts, The Queen Elizabeth Hall and festivals and events all over the world.

Bheki Khoza: Self taught, left-handed guitarist Bheki Khoza is known in two circles; playing guitar in the ancient Zulu tradition known as maskanda, and as a jazz artist. He quickly moved from teaching himself theory from books to a scholarship at the University Of Hartford, Connecticut. Through extra study and Summer School he completed the four year course in two and a half years to receive his Bachelor of Music degree.

He has worked with such diverse artists as Kenny Barron, Hilton Ruiz, Jackie and Rene McLean, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Sibongile Khumalo and the African Jazz Pioneers. Besides his guitar talents, he is an educator and an arranger. Khoza acted as both arranger and musical director for two movies: Drum and Sophiatown. (Don Albert)

They will be backed by Adam Glasser on electric piano, Lucas Senyatso on bass and Berenice Boikanyo on drums.

Booking is essential. The performance costs R100 and is not an option without dinner, which is served from 6.30 pm. The music starts at 8.30 pm.
