On the Road
Practise the same preventative skills you do in parking lots or garages at home.
Plan your route in advance and become familiar with your route before you start your trip. Get a map of the route and study it.
Make sure your rental car is in good working order. Learn how all the windows, door locks and other equipment work before you leave the agency. Keep your maps and rental agreement concealed, not lying around on the seat or dashboard where others can see them.
Keep car doors locked and windows no more than 5cm open while you are driving.
Store luggage in the boot of the car, where it is out of site.
If your car is bumped by another car, think before you get out. If you are in doubt or feel uncomfortable signal to the other driver to follow you to a nearby police station or a busy, well-lit area where it is safe to get out.
Don’t leave your cellphone or other valuables where they are visible from outside the car. Ideally lock your valuables inside the boot before your departure.
At night park in well-lit areas.
If in doubt about the safety of an area call a police station for advice.
